London, England – In a pulsating FA Cup third-round fixture at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal shared the spoils with Manchester United, with the Red Devils making it to the fourth round following a dramatic victory in the penalty shootout.
United led the game on the 52nd minute after Bruno Fernandes struck a brilliant shot on goal. But Arsenal came back 10 minutes later through Mateo Guendouzi’s equalizer in the 62nd minute1.
The match swung right on its head when Diogo Dalot was shown the red card for a second bookable offense in minute 61, forcing Manchester United to play with 10 men for the rest of the match. Despite the disadvantage, United held their line as the score stayed the same at full-time and ended within a draw1.
In the shootout, both Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz missed penalties for Arsenal, and Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir came up big for them with saves clinching the win for the Red Devils. Joshua Zirkzee scored the penalty that clinched it 5-3 in the shootout for Manchester United1.
Frustrated Mikel Arteta said Arsenal deserved more from the match. “We were by far the best team today, we created countless chances,” he said. “But unfortunately, we couldn’t convert them and we paid the price in the penalties.”
On the other hand, Manchester United manager thick Ruben Amorim praised his team for their character in a match where Bayindir was the hero. “It was a really hard match, especially for ten men, but we showed such brave character and desire,” Amorim said. “Bayindir was fantastic, and we are delighted to have progressed.”
The win keeps United’s dreams of winning the FA Cup alive, while Arsenal will now shift its focus to the next stage, the Premier League fixtures.
